Baiting Systems

Termite baiting systems (Exterra, Sentricon, First Line, etc) rely upon termites finding plain wooden stakes in bait stations implanted in the ground around your home. Once the termites begin feeding on the stakes, the plain wooden stakes are removed, the termites shaken into the station, and a bait tube containing pesticides is added to the station. Supposedly, the termites will then begin to feed on the bait matrix, which contains a chitin inhibitor or other termiticide. By passing this material around from termite to termite the colony will be unable to mature and molt properly. It happens slowly and the worker termites do not “recognize” the demise of the colony.

Well, that’s the theory. Now for the reality. When infested bait stakes are lifted out of the station, it breaks the termite tubing and foraging pathways and often the termites abandon the station and do not re-enter the bait tube. Often the termites simply abandon the station, particularly in the summertime if the soil dries out.

Most homeowners don't discover they have termites until the termites have already infested their home. A house contains literally tons of untreated wood and is a far greater attraction to subterranean termites than a few dozen baiting stations surrounding the structure.

Many pest control companies like baiting systems because of the ongoing monitoring fees. Most companies charge $40.00 to $50.00 per month to "monitor" the bait stations. This usually consists of a minimum wage employee walking around your house looking into each station to see if the termites have found it yet.

The fine print of most termite baiting system contracts stipulate that the bait stations remain the property of the termite company. If you stop paying the monitoring fee, they can remove the stations and you have no protection against termites.

In termite company marketing seminars the monitoring fee contracts are referred to as a "revenue stream" - an ongoing source of income to the termite company. They can even be sold by your company to another company in the future.

Also, be sure you get what you pay for, a state investigation last year of Terminix's implementation of its "Sentricon System," a termite control product, found that many Terminix customers did not receive all of the product monitoring required in customer contracts.

Termidor Perimeter Plus

The Termidor liquid treatment is very different from previous, older barrier treatments such as Dragnet and Chlordane, because it utilizes a brand new generation of pesticide chemistry for termite control.

Older termiticides relied on a chemical "barrier" that was placed in the soil around and under the foundation. In most cases, these barriers were designed to repel termites or to quickly kill them when they passed through. Any gaps in the barrier could allow heathy termites into your home.

Termidor is non-repellent, so termites readily pass through once it is placed in the soil close to your foundation and beneath your home (depending on the type of construction). The termites pick up the active ingredient and spread it throughout the colony, transferring it to every other member of the colony.

In a matter of weeks or months, the entire termite colony is eliminated. The effect is much faster than with baiting systems.

Additionally, Premise Foam can be injected into your walls to immediately kill the termites inside your home while the Termidor is working in the soil to eliminate the entire colony.


Termidor is so effective that a major pest control industry magazine recently speculated that its increasing use could eventually reduce overall pest control company revenues. This is because treating one house often eliminates the termite infestations in neighboring houses.
